ALT Agorà Mónos CLIL – September 7th & 14th – Register Now!

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has been gaining popularity in Japan as an innovative way to teach English through content and content through English. In this workshop series, you will learn about CLIL theory and put it to practice by creating lesson plans for your own teaching context. The workshops are not intended to be lectures, so please be prepared to share your ideas and learn from your peers.

Schedule

Workshop 1: September 7th (Tuesday) – 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

We’ll start with a discussion of CLIL theory: its definitions, the 4Cs framework, and other CLIL principles and practices. Then we’ll discuss how ALTs can be content leaders for CLIL and look at models and examples of CLIL in team teaching contexts. The following topics and questions will be discussed.

Understanding CLIL theory
・What are the basic principles of a CLIL approach? How can it be implemented in elementary, junior and senior high school contexts?
Choosing a content topic
・What concepts, points of view, and/or skills do you want to expose to your students?
Finding authentic materials
・What resources can we use to make lessons more “authentic”?
Planning and organizing CLIL lessons
・What are some effective strategies for planning and organizing CLIL lessons?

Workshop 2: September 14th (Tuesday) – 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

If you missed the first workshop, don’t worry. In this interactive workshop, we’ll continue our discussion on how to best put CLIL theory to practice. The following topics and questions will be covered.

Adapting CLIL for textbooks and learner levels
・How can we use CLIL in classes which use standardized textbooks? How can we scaffold for students’ content and language needs?
Designing tasks and projects
・What are some effective strategies for designing tasks and student projects with CLIL principles in mind?
Giving feedback and assessment
・How should we approach feedback and assessment in CLIL lessons?

Nate Olson (Sophia University)
Nate Olson, a former ALT and current researcher at Sophia University, is promoting team-taught CLIL (content and language integrated learning) for his Ph.D. project. He has created a team-taught CLIL training course video series which will be featured on ALTTO Courses.

Nicholas J. Wilson is an elementary and junior high school English teacher and curriculum developer fostering students’ digital literacy through foreign language education. He is a Level 1 & 2 Google Certified Educator and Level 1 Adobe Creative Educator in charge of supporting the professional development of English and Japanese teachers as a mentor, area leader, and member of the local board of education’s Digital Transformation Committee. His current research focuses on exploring the potential of the metaverse as a learning environment. He is also an active JALT officer involved in planning, promoting, and coordinating regional events and national conferences, and the founder and organizer of ALT Agorà, a series of monthly webinars designed for assistant language teachers, part of the ALT Training Online grassroots initiative.
